Very large demijohns are called carboys and are the most difficult of all the hand blown bottles to fashion. They were made to hold wine, vinegar, cider, even corrosive materials as glass would be impervious to these. Carboys are usually encased in wicker or even metal supporting baskets for protection during transport. This eastern European green glass carboy is encased in straw with a wicker basket.
