The sun barely appears on the Scottish horizon as I stand outside the Stromness Hotel, Orkney Islands.
Hamish, a stout Scot, is sizing up my appearance before we strike off for the Scapa Flow, where Viking ships anchored more than 1000 years ago.
But Hamish is more interested in my scarf at the moment.
“Why is it, Peterman, you have a more proper Scot’s scarf than I?”
Knowing we weren’t leaving until I rectified the situation, we exchanged scarves.
He got a much better deal.
So will you.
