Carving blade or “Asse de Rognage.” Cooper’s tool made of three pieces of welded steel used to carve the interior bottom end of the barrel. While carving on a bias, this tool would remove half of the wood’s thickness and allow the barrel to lodge into a beveled fitting. The blade has a rounded and concave form and is quite heavy in order to increase the precision of the strike. The wooden handle is short to allow the hand to operate within the small confines of the barrel. France, late 19th century. Each blade will slightly vary in size and shape.
