Throwing a Curve.

“Sleeves” is what we called them. They were plain and ordinary, nothing to think about twice. (Or so I thought.) But now I realize they were unduplicatable.

I still have mine, and a few emotions, dating from my days in professional baseball.

When we wore our sleeves, it was always the best time of the year. We were beginning to feel up.

I laugh at the imitations today. They have pseudo names like “river shirts,” “punting jerseys,” “Henley pullovers.”

Sleeves are, were, and always will be comfortable and engaging to wear; lightweight; warm, not hot; not itchy, not sticky, not fussy. Sleeves are good-looking in the way things are when they aren’t trying to be good-looking.

And you still don’t have to play professional baseball to get one.

American Baseball Sleeves (No. 1949). Two-button placket. Made of two layers of good cotton to wick away moisture; outer fabric has minute pores, like pigskin. A little sleeker. Imported.

quality shirt
I purchased one of these shirts in an apparently discontinued color (dark green-very old-timey) years ago for my stepson, and when the shirt came on sale recently, I decided to get him one in red because he absolutely LOVES this shirt! He is, by the way, VERY difficult to fit into standard sizes because he carries about 75% of his ample weight (XXL) around his chest more than his belly. He is rather short-waisted. Somehow the cut of this shirt hides the bulk but doesn't have that pup-tent volume that dooms so many XXL shirts. A forever classic, old-school (like 1916, not 1979) look!

Play the game!
A substantial garment, the real deal. It makes other versions of sleeves seem like pathetic posers, just as the catalog declares it makes you look instantly athletic. I have both the red and the Dodger Blue versions. I had to buy one for my girlfriend who threatened to make mine disappear. The colors are vivid, strong, and lasting. One of my favorite purchases from J Peterman of all time.

Batter Up
I love these shirts. In S. AZ, I layer them with a complimentary color short sleeve T undershirt for our brutal winter. Tail out or tail in, a home run each time. Heavy duty, they are made to go extra innings. Bad news, I already have all four colors. None left in the bullpen.

Unsurpassed Casual Comfort
Well worn jeans or khakis and sleeves. Add converse all-stars (Chucks for the younger crowd), a large dog curled at your feet, a wee dram and a great book. Makes me want to order another. Oops, wait a minute, I did. It doesnt get better.

Warm and cozy
This is a very comfortable shirt. Good by itself on fall days, or as a layer, in winter. The feel of the cotton is excellent. I did need to wash it a couple of times to get out something used in its manufacture (I have allergies) But I am very happy with it, and have reordered it.
