Stunning and rare Art Nouveau water filter from the turn of the century. Made by the German company, Berkefeld, for the French company Compagnie Francaise du Filtre. This is a gravity fed filtration system that uses a ceramic filter (removable inner sleeve). Berkefeld started manufacturing filters in the late 1800's.
The English potter, Henry Doulton, is credited with developing the first commercial ceramic filters for removing bacteria from drinking water. In 1815 Queen Victoria commissioned Doulton to produce a water filter for the Royal Household and thus he created a gravity fed filtration system using a ceramic filter. This German model utilizes Doulton's work, and was likely intended for home use.
