Railroad lamps are distinguished from lanterns by both function and design. Lamps were generally intended to be stationary, and were generally made of sheet metal or cast iron body. Lanterns were designed to be portable and used globes which were surrounded by a metal frame. This lamp has an unusual copper body with a clear glass lens in front and a small colored glass lens in back. It has a flip up chimney or vent and handle with hook. France, Ca. 1910.
